Bonus Podcast – Radio Cambridgeshire Appearance
Back in the summer of 2007, I made a couple of appearances on BBC Radio Cambridgeshire on the Sue Dougan afternoon show. I went on the show alongside the artistic director of the Cambridge Shakespeare Festival David Crilly to promote the show A Midsummer Night’s Dream which I was appearing in at the time.
I performed several magic effects on the show and I thought you, my lovely Smoke & Mirrors listeners, might like to hear a slightly different type of radio magic show.

The Magicast – Final Episode!
The Final Episode of The Smoke & Mirrors Radio Show Magicast [30:13m]: Play Now | Play in Popup | DownloadHaving spoken about him in several prior episodes of The Magic News, I’m pleased to say that John Van Der Put joins us in the studio for this last episode of the Smoke & Mirrors Magicast.
John is a prolific creator of magic and mystery, as well as the artistic director of StandNotAmazed theatre company who create magical theatre and theatrical magic. John also has an alter ego who joins us (very briefly) in the studio known simply as Piff The Magic Dragon.
John and I discuss the creation of magic for theatre, his upcoming shows and the moment that Piff was born. John’s writing partner(!) also joins us briefly and we find the one thing that John and Barack Obama have in common. What a rip-roaring show it was!
The Magicast – Episode Eight
A great episode of the podcast this week – magician John Lenahan joins me in the studio to talk about his status as the ‘rogue magician’ after being expelled from The Magic Circle.
We also discuss the cons and scams he investigated and performed as part of his series ‘Hoaxbusters’ which aired on ITV and the nature of exposure in magic. We also chat about The Masked Magician and John’s novel Shadowmagic.
John was a fantastic guest, which may explain why we ran over a little, which is good news for you lovely listeners as this is a bumper edition of the magicast. Enjoy!
Last Show Date Moved
After a great show earlier this evening with Fay Presto (which will be online soon), the gents at Resonance FM and myself had a chat and decided that it was best to put the last show back one week, to the 23rd June.
There’s a couple of reasons for this, mainly due to the fact that Resonance is having to undergo some emergency work on the studios for a week, starting on 15th June until 22nd June.
There’s also the fact that 16th June (when the show was originally due to go out) is the opening night of a new play that I’m performing in at The Union Theatre. For all the info, check out Upstart-Theatre.co.uk or MatthewDuggan.co.uk.
All of this means that moving the last show – with John Van Der Put as my guest – makes sense. So tune in to the show on 23rd June. In the meantime, check out all the previous episodes via iTunes or by clicking on Podcast Episodes.
Jonathan Goodwin Escapes
I mentioned during the seventh episode of Smoke & Mirrors that I would post some videos of escapologist Jonathan Goodwin doing his thing on his show One Way Out on The Discovery Channel. I think you know what’s coming next…
The following are the long trailer for The Discovery Channel show, the live hanging that Jonathan mentions on the show and the amazing/horrific scorpion escape. Enjoy!
The Magicast – Episode Seven
We get all showbiz in this week’s show as we talk to Discovery Channel star and top escapologist Jonathan Goodwin, live on the phone from Los Angeles, California.
Jonathan is a top performer who is the feature performer on One Way Out – a show with death-defying escapes and mad science (including Jonathan escaping from handcuffs while trying to keep as still as possible to ensure the scorpion in his mouth didn’t try to maim him). I’ll post some of the videos of Jonathan from his show, but in the meantime, enjoy this excellent episode of the podcast from one of the loveliest people in the world of bonkers stunts and escapes!
